Knowing they've got a good thing, the designers at Chevrolet have kept the 2020 Equinox mostly in line with the 2019 model. Labeled a compact crossover, this versatile vehicle isn't compact when it comes to comfort, efficiency, and safety. Aside from a few color choices like adding Chocolate Metallic and Cayenne Orange to the selection, the big update is the extension of front collision alert with automatic braking to all Equinox models along with lane holding ability.
What could be better for a nimble crossover with manageable dimensions than a pair of turbocharged engines like a 1.5-liter turbo-4 with 170 horsepower output and a 2-liter turbo-4 blasting 252 horsepower? Striving for a more economical ride, the 1.5-liter block meshes with a 6-speed automatic transmission for 26 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. Considering the number of horses it feeds, the 2-liter engine still eats light when teamed with a 9-speed automatic transmission by getting 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The 2020 Equinox makes driving even less costly by giving both blocks E15 compatibility.
The 2020 Equinox comes in 4 versions, the L, LS, LT, and Premium, but all rely on one reliable platform. Front passengers have 40 inches above and 40.9 inches below to enjoy. The back seat is nearly as roomy with a headroom of 38.5 inches and legroom of 39.9 inches. Roominess extends to freight with a normal holding space of 29.9 cubic feet that swells to 63.9 cubic feet when the rear seats are out of the way. In the L edition, this interior room is filled with frills like air conditioning, a 7-inch touchscreen, 6-speaker sound, hands-free wireless capability, 2 USB charging ports, 2 12-volt outlets, heated side mirrors, keyless locks and starting, and halogen headlights that automatically come on when night falls.
Selecting the LS edition lets you build on the L model with optional choices like carpeted floor mats or power driver's seat positioning. The LT model completes its mission of offering more comforts by giving the driver 8 motorized seat positions along with a SiriusXM radio trial subscription. It also lights the way with HID headlights. Leather upholstery is the first indicator of the Premium edition's luxury level. Other features include heated front seats, LED headlights and taillights, an 8-inch touchscreen, a wireless charger, twin climate zones, a 120-volt outlet, and a no-hands motorized back hatch.
The 2020 Chevy Equinox not only looks solid, but it is also solid with test results from the NHTSA to prove it. Overall, it received 5 stars that included 5 stars for frontal collision and side-impact testing. Along with a tough body, the Equinox secures passengers with airbags, a rearview camera, traction and stability control, and antilock brakes. This basic capability is enhanced by smart features like a front impact alert with automated braking and pedestrian detection. All Equinox models can also automatically maintain their current lane and warn you if things go off course. Choosing the Premium edition brings in the ability to warn of rear cross-traffic dangers.
