VIDEO: How to Test Tire Tread With a Penny

Your tires are one of the most important components of your vehicle. If they’re damaged, you can’t sufficiently grip the road. The tire tread needs to be measured periodically. You can’t risk driving around on bald tires. It’s a safety hazard because you won’t be able to stop as quickly as necessary. You’re likely to fail a vehicle inspection, too. This would mean that you’d be banned from driving on the road until you replace the tires.

Is There a Trick for Testing Tire Tread?

While you should always bring your vehicle into a service center for a tread depth test, you can do a basic inspection using a penny. This will tell you whether you have reason for concern with the quality of your tires.

Start by holding the penny between your fingertips. Lincoln should face you while you place him headfirst into the center groove of the tire tread. If you can see the top of his head, it’s a sign that your tire tread is very low. You’ll want to get the tires replaced as soon as possible. If you can see his hair partially, you should start shopping for tires. Ideally, you don’t want to see any of his forehead.
